Tone Words That Quietly Exclude

5 min read

Tone words are not neutral. ‘Aggressive’ skews male applicant rates. ‘Caring’ skews female. ‘Fast-paced’ and ‘high-energy’ correlate with lower application rates from autistic and disabled candidates.

You do not need to scrub personality from the JD. You do need to ask, for each adjective, what behaviour it actually points to — and write the behaviour instead.
